Da Vinci Robotic Surgery Q & A

What is the da Vinci robotic surgery?

The da Vinci robotic surgery consists of a highly sophisticated robotic surgical system that enables procedures to be performed laparoscopically with enhanced skill and precision.

Like traditional laparoscopic surgery, surgery performed with the da Vinci system is minimally invasive, using only a few tiny incisions. A long tube with a small video camera attached is inserted through one incision. The camera transmits a magnified 3-D image of the surgical field from inside the patient to a computer monitor. Special instruments used to perform the procedure are inserted through the other incisions.

With the da Vinci system, however, these inserted instruments are affixed to robotic arms that are controlled with incredible precision by the surgeon from a nearby computer console.

What are the advantages of da Vinci robotic surgery?

The da Vinci robotic surgery, first approved for use in gynecological procedures in 2005, offers patients the benefits of minimally invasive surgery – quicker recovery time, less pain and a decrease in blood loss, internal scarring, and risk of infection –  with increased precision and reduced complications.

Robotic arms mimic natural hand movements, improved by tremor canceling software, and the ability to bend and rotate into positions the human hand can’t. The detailed and magnified 3D surgical view also significantly improves the surgeon’s ability to perform surgical dissection with improved quality in complex cases.

Is the surgeon still in charge of robotic surgery?

Your surgeon is in full control and performs the surgery remotely. Seated at a computer console located a few feet from the operating table, your surgeon uses hand controls to manipulate the robotic arms and instruments, while viewing an enhanced image of the surgical field on the monitor.

What procedures are performed with da Vinci robotic surgery?

Dr. Klein and her team are skilled in utilizing robotic-assisted technology for a wide range of gynecological procedures. Some of the most common procedures include:

  • Hysterectomy
  • Ovarian cystectomy
  • Pelvic adhesion removal

By using the da Vinci Surgical System, Dr. Klein and her team are able to perform complex procedures through small incisions.
